They all turned it down, Burstyn specifically because she was preparing for a lengthy Broadway play performance in Same Time Next Year. My feeling is that any of these three actresses Bancroft, Woodward, Burstyn would have probably done an equally magnificent job playing Nurse Ratched as Louis Fletcher did. It would have imo been a bit of a challenge perhaps for Woodward(although I agree she is one of the five greatest American actresses of the 50s-90's and has won a near record Three New York Film Critics Best Actress awards) as she presents as such a sweet, calm, benign person. However great actors can transform themselves. Bancroft would be great, perhaps a bit over the top, anyway good for Fletcher that she took the role and delivered a stellar memorable award winning performance.

Beautiful person, totally deserving of the oscar for perfectly executing a perfectly written character. Also, it's nice to learn that Carol Kane once embodied all the female characters ever created by Tim Burton. Poor creature. Poor creatures.
